My mom was a school teacher in a one room school in Tama County. She always reviewed my writing and was a stickler on sentence structure. She was my Mom so I had to listen to her. But I never thought it was all that important.
In Junior high we had a principal who had been an English teacher. We did not know him to be humorous or anything but serious. Then in the 9th grade we were treated to a “graduation” assembly. The principal was the speaker. Ho humm we thought. He started out with a series of one liners.
“I get up at 5:30 every morning. My wife gets up at 6:00. I beat my wife up every morning!”
And that’s when I understood sentence structure. So while I’m still not that good, I do reread what I write and make a lot of changes because otherwise everyone else would be as clueless as I am.
